Section 5(1) of the Standards and Administration Regulation allows operators to store solid manure, composting materials, or compost in the same location for seven months over a three year period. The site must be at least 150 metres from the nearest residence that is not owned or under the control of the owner or operator of the storage area.
Operators are encouraged not to locate short term solid manure piles near public gathering places or at intersections where the pile can interfere with sight lines. The NRCB can require an operator to move short term solid manure storages away from public gathering places if they are causing an inappropriate disturbance.
Runoff from the manure pile must not create a risk to the environment or leave the property. Section 5 states that it must be located at least one metre above the water table and must not be located on land that:
- is within 30 metres of a common body of water, where the land slopes towards the common body of water and the mean slope of the land is four per cent or less, measured over 90 metres from the edge of the common body of water.
- is within 60 metres of a common body of water, where the land slopes towards the common body of water and the mean slope of the land is greater than four percent but less than six per cent, measured over 90 metres from the edge of the common body of water.
- is within 90 metres of a common body of water, where the land slopes towards the common body of water and the mean slope of the land is six percent or greater but less than 12 per cent, measured over 90 metres from the edge of the common body of water.
