New members appointed to Board of NRCB
The Lieutenant Governor in Council has made the following new appointments to the Board of the NRCB:
Rich Smith – Rich joins the Board as a part-time governance and tribunal member for a four-year term beginning April 11, 2023. His appointment follows a career with extensive experience in the livestock industry, including 15 years as executive director of Alberta Beef Producers, seven years working in the hog industry, and 16 years as an agricultural engineer with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation. Rich has also dedicated his time as a member of the Clean Air Strategic Alliance, Ag for Life, the City of Airdrie Municipal Planning Commission, and the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. He also spent many years as a member of the NRCB’s Policy Advisory Group. Rich has detailed knowledge of natural resource management and environmental issues, legislation, policies, and regulations, and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta and of the Canadian Society for Bioengineering. Rich has both a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in agricultural engineering.
Darin Stepaniuk – Darin joins the Board as an acting tribunal member for a three-year term effective April 11, 2023 after a 30-year career in the legal and resource management fields, including serving as director of the Environmental Law Section of Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. In this role he managed the review of environmental impacts assessments under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. His time with the Government of Alberta also saw his participation in seven major public interest board hearings on oil sands, power plants, and other projects. In addition to his LL.B. Darin also has a B.Sc., an M.Sc. in renewable wildlife and rangeland resources, and has been appointed as a King’s Counsel.
The Lieutenant Governor in Council has also reappointed the following:
Sandi Roberts as a part-time governance and tribunal Board member for a term to expire on September 30, 2026.
Earl Graham as an acting tribunal Board member for a term to expire on September 30, 2025.
Walter Ceroici as an acting tribunal Board member for a term to expire on November 25, 2025.
The Board of the NRCB wishes to thank part-time governance and tribunal Board member Page Stuart, and acting tribunal Board member Indra Maharaj for their years of service and their significant contributions to the NRCB. Page’s term expired on April 11, 2023 while Indra resigned to accept an appointment to the Calgary criminal division and Calgary regional division of the Provincial Court of Alberta.
